MAiA members presented “A Survey on Attitudes towards Artificial Intelligence in Archaeology”, a collaborative initiative developed within Working Group 1 with contributions from MAiA members across the network.
The presentation explored how archaeologists currently perceive and use Artificial Intelligence within the discipline. The survey aimed to better understand the opportunities, concerns, expectations, and challenges associated with AI applications in archaeology, as well as the varying levels of familiarity and engagement with AI tools across the field.
To capture a broad range of perspectives, the survey was circulated both within and beyond the MAiA community. The presentation shared the survey design process and introduced preliminary findings, offering an initial overview of current attitudes towards AI in archaeological research and practice.
The results highlighted the growing interest in AI across archaeology, while also pointing to important questions around skills, accessibility, transparency, ethics, and methodological standards. The survey represents a significant step in understanding how the archaeological community is approaching AI during a period of rapid technological change.
This work reflects MAiA’s broader commitment to encouraging critical, collaborative, and ethically informed discussions on the role of AI in archaeology.
