We are delighted to announce that the Europa Nostra Award has been awarded to a groundbreaking project focused on rapid documentation of cultural heritage damage following the 2023 earthquakes in south-east Türkiye and northern Syria.
Following the devastating 2023 earthquakes, this initiative mobilised volunteers and researchers to assess over 1,500 archaeological and historic sites using a unique combination of citizen observations and satellite data. The project stands as a scalable model for post-disaster heritage assessment, having led to the creation of an open-access digital map supporting heritage protection, research, and recovery.
Nusret Demir (from MAIA’s Working Group 3) contributed to this collaboration, showcasing the strength of interdisciplinary and international networks.
