MAIA WG3 Workshop | 30–31 March | Hainburg and online
On 30 and 31 March, MAIA Working Group 3 will hold a workshop titled Future Use of AI in Archaeology. The event is co-located with the MAIA meeting in Hainburg, with online participation available.
Rather than concentrating on established AI applications in archaeology, the workshop will examine two specific areas. First, it will consider long-standing archaeological challenges, both structural and routine, that have not yet been meaningfully addressed through AI. Second, it will explore emerging AI technologies that have seen little or no uptake within archaeological research.
The format includes short “Inspiration Talks” of five to ten minutes. These are intended to outline problems, technological developments or interdisciplinary perspectives, rather than to present completed case studies. Proposed themes include:
• Grand challenges in archaeology
• Everyday archaeological practice
• Emerging AI technologies
• Interdisciplinary approaches
The emphasis is analytical rather than promotional. AI is developing rapidly across domains, yet archaeology often adopts tools selectively and sometimes without clear alignment to its most pressing needs. This workshop provides space to reflect on whether current trajectories are appropriate, where gaps remain, and what responsible experimentation might look like.
Participation is open beyond WG3 and MAIA membership.
Deadlines
• Talk topics: 8 March
• Online participation: 22 March
Registration and optional talk submission can be completed via the online form:
The workshop aims to foster a grounded discussion about how AI might contribute to archaeology in the future, with attention to both methodological limitations and realistic opportunities.
