A Diverse and Exciting Programme

The 2026 conference features a wide range of sessions that showcase the breadth of computational approaches to archaeology. Topics include:

  • Linked Open Data and semantic frameworks (S1, S28, S30)
  • Tools, methods, and infrastructures for digital archaeology (S2, S3, S6, S12, S24, S43)
  • AI and machine learning applications in heritage and archaeology (S9, S20, S29, S33, S37, S47)
  • Remote sensing, landscape and seafaring archaeology (S5, S17, S34, S37, S40, S45, S51)
  • Mortuary, sensory, and cognitive archaeology (S7, S10, S15, S19)
  • Data reuse, ethics, and governance (S22, S24, S42, S44, S46)
  • Community and collaborative practices (S18, S27)
  • New directions in 3D, AR, and archaeogaming (S13, S23, S32, S41, S52)

From benchmark datasets and FAIR principles to post-digital AI practices and vision foundation models, the programme demonstrates how rapidly the field is evolving.

MAIA and AI at CAA 2026

Several sessions connect directly with the themes of the MAIA COST Action (CA23141: Managing Artificial Intelligence in Archaeology, 2024–2028), including:

  • S9: AI Applications in Cultural Heritage and Archaeological Protection
  • S20: Digital Archaeological Collections as AI Training Data
  • S29: AI Across the Heritage Pipeline: From Algorithms through Fieldwork to Deliverables
  • S33: Generative AI, Text Mining, and Semantic Modelling: Using Big Models for Big Problems, FAIRly!
  • S37: Future Sight on Past Landscapes: Vision Foundation Models for Archaeological Remote Sensing
  • S47: Artificial Intelligence, a Step into the Post-digital Era of Archaeology?

These sessions reflect the growing importance of data quality, governance, ethics, and FAIR/CARE/TADA principles in shaping how AI is applied in archaeology.

Over the coming weeks, MAIA will feature selected sessions in detail on this website — so stay tuned if you want a deeper look at how the AI community in archaeology is engaging with these themes.

How to Get Involved

  1. Review the full list of sessions.
  2. Choose the one that best fits your work.
  3. Submit your abstract by 26 October 2025.

We look forward to seeing a strong MAIA presence in Vienna and to continuing the conversation on how AI can support archaeological practice in transparent, reproducible, and ethically responsible ways.
