Members of the MAIA COST Action at the kick-off meeting in Brussels

MAIA Officially Launches

First Management Committee Meeting in Brussels, September 2024

On September 20, 2024, MAIA officially launched, bringing together a network of archaeologists, digital archaeologists, and computer scientists to develop a shared understanding of AI applications in archaeology.

The first Management Committee (MC) meeting took place in Brussels at the COST headquarters. The MC is responsible for taking the necessary actions to ensure that MAIA meets its aims and objectives; on this occasion, a Core Group was elected to oversee the day-to-day management. This meeting marked the first step in establishing the network of researchers, users, and innovators that MAIA aims to create. MC members had the opportunity to discuss the content and goals of each Working Group (WG), offering valuable insights and perspectives on the action’s future potential.

The newly elected Core Group includes Action Chair Gabriele Gattiglia (University of Pisa) and Vice Chair Holly Wright (University of York). Francesca Anichini (University of Pisa) was appointed Science Communication Coordinator, with Chiara Giovannetti (Sapienza University of Rome) as her deputy. Despina Catapoti (University of the Aegean) will serve as Grant Awarding Coordinator.

The Working Group leaders are Alex Brandsen (Leiden University, WG1), Vera Moitinho de Almeida (University of Porto, WG2), and Anna Foka (Uppsala University, WG3), with Michael Hedderich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität) as Vice-Leader. Holly Wright (University of York) will lead WG4.
