MAIA WG4 Workshop | Antalya 2026

Creative and Practical Strategies for Communication and Dissemination

As part of the COST Action CA23141 “Managing Artificial Intelligence in Archaeology” (MAIA), Working Group 4 (WG4) will convene for a three-day workshop in Antalya, Türkiye, from 2–4 September 2026. Hosted at the Akdeniz University Faculty of Tourism, the workshop will bring together MAIA members to develop creative and practical approaches to communicating and disseminating research on artificial intelligence in archaeology.

Effective communication and dissemination are essential for ensuring that the knowledge, methods and results developed within MAIA reach both academic and wider audiences. The workshop will therefore focus on strengthening participants’ practical skills in storytelling, visual communication, media analysis and communication strategy, while also creating opportunities to explore how archaeological research and the use of AI can be communicated across different media and to different communities.

The first day of the workshop will introduce key principles and practical tools for effective communication. Training sessions will address storytelling, visual communication, media analysis and communication strategy, followed by group exercises and a MAIA Café session designed to encourage discussion and exchange among participants.

The second day will focus on collaborative group work organised around three parallel tracks:

  • Creative Engagement & Public Contests
  • Communication of AI in Archaeology Across Media
  • Project Management & Dissemination

Participants will work together to develop ideas and practical outputs, followed by presentations and discussion in a “Show and Tell” session. The day will conclude with a social excursion to the Side Archaeological Site, organised with the support of ODEON Tours, providing an informal setting for further exchange and networking.

The final day will focus on the future work of WG4. Following an open meeting, participants will discuss the WG4 Roadmap and Responsibilities, identify priorities for future activities, and conclude the workshop with a closing session and social activities.

The workshop aims to strengthen communication and dissemination capacities within MAIA while fostering collaboration, creativity and the exchange of practical knowledge among Working Group members. Through a combination of training, collaborative exercises, group work and informal exchange, the workshop will contribute to developing effective strategies for communicating AI-related archaeological research to diverse audiences.
